From webpage to repair

Click Chart Doctor. Select the chart on the page. Compare the original and repair here.

Works from the page you are already viewing, including your logged-in Twitter/X feed. Open an image at a readable size first. Capture includes only what is visible on screen.

Preview 0.3.0: selection and crop preview stay on your source page. Signed-in repairs run in the background; a comparison tab opens when the chart and explanation are ready. Signed-out users get a sign-in tab immediately after clicking Repair.

Verify your email once on Chart Doctor. The extension and website share your login in the same browser, for seven days after your last use.

Safari on Mac · temporary preview

Download for Safari

  1. Requires Safari 18.4 or later. Download the ZIP.
  2. In Safari → Settings → Advanced, enable Show features for web developers.
  3. In Settings → Developer, click Add Temporary Extension…. Allow unsigned extensions when prompted, then select the ZIP or its extracted folder.
  4. Enable Chart Doctor. Allow access to dataviz.karthiks.co when requested, so your selection can reach the repair form.

Safari removes temporary extensions after 24 hours or when you quit. Repeat the installation to use it again. This preview is not a signed App Store extension; Safari and live Twitter capture still need verification on a Mac. Apple’s installation guide.

Chrome · unpacked preview

Download for Chrome

  1. Download and unzip the file.
  2. Open chrome://extensions and enable Developer mode.
  3. Click Load unpacked and select the extracted folder containing manifest.json.
  4. Pin Chart Doctor from the Extensions menu.

Capture, check, repair

  1. Open the webpage and click Chart Doctor in the toolbar.
  2. Drag around the chart directly on the webpage. Include its title, axes, legend and source. Inspect the crop in the overlay; use Select again to redraw or Escape to cancel.
  3. Add any instructions and click Repair. If signed in, keep browsing while it runs in the background. A comparison tab opens only when the chart and explanation are ready. Otherwise, a tab opens for email sign-in.
  4. Verify email if needed. The result shows the original and repaired charts, main insight, changes, reasons, caveats, download and refinement controls. Your source page stays open.

The full screenshot stays in your browser. Only your selected crop reaches this form; it is uploaded when you submit. The extension accesses only Chart Doctor’s login cookie, never Twitter cookies. Background job IDs survive browser-worker restarts; the chart is not submitted again. Normal repair limits and the privacy policy apply. No automatic detection, batches or changes to the original webpage.

Updating the preview

These development installs do not auto-update. In Chrome, replace the files in the installed folder with the latest download, then click Reload at chrome://extensions. In Safari, add the latest ZIP again using Settings → Developer → Add Temporary Extension…; remove the older temporary copy if both appear.

Website, login and repair-engine updates apply immediately. Automatic extension updates require a distributed release; these previews are not store releases.
